Simpson Wins 2018 Players Championship
Webb Simpson won the 2018 edition of The Players Championship with a score of 18 under. Charl Schwartzel, Jimmy Walker and Xander Schauffele tied for second at 14 under.
The win is the first for Simpson since 2013, and the fifth in his career. Following a string of significant wins by players using anchored putters, including Simpson and the 2012 US Open, Adam Scott at the 2013 Masters, Keegan Bradley at the 2011 PGA Championship and Ernie Els at the 2012 Open, PGA rules were adjusted at the start of the 2016 season to no longer allow players to use anchored putters. After the rule change, Simpson struggled until receiving a tip from 2010 Players winner, Tim Clark, during the 2017 Players Championship weekend.
After receiving the tip, Simpson began using a claw style of putting used by several Tour players, including Matt Kuchar and Bryson DeChambeau. In the year since, his ranking has jumped from 65th to 20th in the world, thanks in no small part to 10 top 10 finishes.
