There’s a lot of talk in the news at the moment about the potential benefits of medical marijuana and associated products, so it’s not surprising that CBD oil is also attracting a great deal of attention.

New CBD oil products and websites promoting them are appearing at an extraordinary rate and it’s becoming increasingly difficult for interested consumers to assess and compare their benefits.

The problem is compounded by the fact that CBD oil is itself just one of a number of cannabis derivatives currently on the market, and before talking about any specific products it’s worth taking a step back to define exactly what CBD oil is, and why you might consider taking it.

What is CBD Oil

“CBD” is the abbreviation for cannabidiol, one of more than a hundred chemical compounds, collectively known as cannabinoids, which are derived from the cannabis sativa plant.

These cannabinoids have a wide variety of effects on the human body; the well-known tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), for example, being the psychoactive compound responsible for the “high” commonly sought by cannabis users.

CBD, by contrast, has no psychoactive properties and is commonly derived from the hemp plant, which is a variety of cannabis sativa deliberately cultivated to contain only trace amounts of THC.

The Benefits of CBD

A wide range of mental and physical health benefits have been claimed for CBD; and it seems to be particularly effective in the relief of pain, inflammation, anxiety and depression.

There’s some evidence that it may help in tackling sleep disorders and in the treatment of some neurological conditions, and it has also been promoted as beneficial for the circulatory system.

Whatever benefits you are seeking, there are a number of CBD options available.

CBD Oil Products

CBD can be extracted from the hemp plant in the form of CBD oil or as a chemical isolate. In the form of oil, it is a hugely versatile product which can be combined with other carrier oils to make capsules, drops, tinctures, vapes, dabs or topical applications.

As an isolate, CBD is commonly made into gummy type candies for ease of consumption.

But whichever option you choose, it’s important to go for products labelled “full” or “broad” spectrum to ensure you are getting all the health benefits of the hemp plant, which include a rich supply of polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega 6 and omega 3) and without which CBD oil appears not to function as effectively.

It’s also necessary to distinguish CBD oil from hemp oil which is produced by cold pressing the seeds of the plant (this oil is sometimes also called hemp seed oil, for this reason).

CBD – Oil or Gummies?

Beyond these considerations, the choice between oil and gummies is very much a matter of personal preference, but there are some key differences.

Firstly, CBD gummies are a food product which needs to be digested like any other and this will slow down the rate at which the active CBD being consumed is absorbed and utilized by the body.

On the other hand, the process of digestion also seems to help preserve the potency of the CBD compound, thereby delivering more “bang per buck” than other products.

The main advantage of using CBD oil is the flexibility of dosage it allows. While each gummy will contain a pre-determined dose, the use of drops or tinctures will allow you easily to adjust the amount you are consuming. And as pleasant as they are to taste, there are reasons, such as sugar content, why simply eating more and more gummies may be undesirable.
