CAPTO Putting – A Case Study

 

Improving one’s putting performance is a challenge that many golfers chase their entire lives. The power of media, whether it be social media, magazines, or tv programs, can make even the theoretically simplest movement of the game, far more complicated than it needs to be. This is one of the many reasons why technology-enabled putting aids are continuing to grow in popularity with coaches and players alike. The CAPTO putting sensor is a powerful, lightweight tool that measures all of the essential metrics about ones putting stroke. It is a powerful way to not only assess and learn more about your stroke, but it also helps players better conceptualize what it is that needs to be done to finally see improvements in performance.

 

Recently, golf coach Arick Zeigel used the CAPTO putting sensor to help his student, Richard, improve his putting performance. Within a dozen putts, Richard was seeing a marked improvement. Here’s what happened:

 

 

The Player

 

Richard is a passionate amateur player that despite playing regularly, putting has continued to be a pain point within his game. He has tried everything he can think of, and at this point has too many thoughts going on and is struggling to sort through his own thoughts as to what he really needs to do. He turned to Arick and the CAPTO putting sensor to help assess and conceptualize what it is he really needs to focus on.

 

 

The Assessment

 

During the assessment Arick asked Richard to hit an assortment of 10 putts ranging from 6-15 feet. 6 of the 10 putts were relatively straight while 2 were right to left, and 2 were left to right. This gave Arick more representative data as Richard had to hit every putt from a different location resulting in less chance of him adapting, adjusting or manipulating his stroke thus skewing the data.

 

The reason they chose 6-15 feet was based on Richards feedback as to his biggest area of weakness when it comes to converting putts from within this range.

 

 

CAPTO Data

 

Arick took Richard through the data that was captured with CAPTO during the assessment, both the physical numbers of each metric as well as the 3D visual to help Richard better see and conceptualize what was really occurring throughout the stroke.

 

What they found was that ultimately Richards launch direction was 2.4 degrees left on average of his intended target. This was a result of the path being 2.4 degrees left through impact as well as the face being 2.3 degrees closed.

 

This outcome results in one of two things for Richard – 1) missed putts left (obviously) or 2) inconsistencies in ball launch and roll.

 

 

Training

 

Based on this data, Arick set up 3 stations for Richard.

 

Station 1: The first was using a training aid called GravityFit. In this station Richard’s focus was on getting into a more bent over posture at address as he was very tall initially. Richard made 5 practice swings with the GravityFit on without holding his putter, focusing on good posture and engaging rotation through his upper back.

 

Station 2: Richard then took off the GravityFit and hit 5 putts with his sand wedge (yes, sand wedge) with 3 quarters behind the ball. The goal of this station was to better understand how to get a ball rolling through rise angle thus improving stroke arc.

 

Station 3: Richard then hit 3 putts from 9 feet with no training aids. This station was where Arick then recaptured putts using CAPTO. After each putt, Richard had to provide feedback on how closely that putt compared to the drills. After he had hit all 3 putts, Arick then provided corrections (if needed) on Richards feedback.

 

Richard then went back through each station until the lesson was over.

 

 

Final Result

 

At the end of the lesson they recompiled all the data that was collected.

 

  • Launch direction:
    • Beginning = 2.4 degrees left of target on average
    • End = 0.5 degrees left on average
  • Face:
    • Beginning = 2.3 degrees closed at impact
    • End = 0.1 degrees open at impact
  • Path:
    • Beginning = 2.4 degrees left
    • End = 1.8 degrees left
