Practice Series - 5: The Keys to Effective Golf Practice

I have a confession to make about my golf practice habits.

I am a Ricky Range-aholic. A “swimming pool-er.” Rest assured I hit an outstanding 8 iron. I can cut it, draw it, fade it. The low trajectory wedge with draw? 5 Wood off the deck high cut or high draw? Not so much.

But, praise the golf gods. I have seen the light. In my 8th decade. After years struggling to drop my handicap below 9. I've moved back a tee box here, a tee box there. I've chastised myself for not being able to pull off the par 5 second shot, 215-yard 3 wood to a wide-open landing area green side. I've had multiple iterations of new clubs, putters, drivers. Different golf balls. All the usual suspects.

Then I got lucky. I got a job with GLT Golf writing these blogs and other golf related content. And that led me to the game-like training concepts I have been blogging about this month, and wonders of wonders, I paid attention. I began practicing the GLT way.

The scores are stabilizing. The shots are shaping. The course doesn’t hold the terror of a cavernous shark mouth. It’s presenting an opportunity to play golf, not play at golf.

Why? Because I have unlocked THE DOOR. The door that has been holding me back from realizing my full potential. GLT is the key.

How? Spacing, variability, challenge. Training to learn. Interleaved practice. Performance games.

The best news? All these “new-fangled” concepts make all the sense in the world. It’s not like learning a new language from scratch. It’s akin to learning the fundamentals of that language and then carrying on a conversation.

For example: performance games. Begin by challenging yourself to make 9 up and downs in a row. Then hit low, medium, and high trajectory fades, draws, and straight shots. Challenge yourself to 2-putt from 20 to 60 feet. Then 1-putt from 6 to 12 feet. Assign scores to each segment. Give yourself an hour to complete each game.

These drills will get you to the transition phase in the practice arc. And lead you on to the performance phase where the drills and games will get you on the path to pulling off all those crucial game-enhancing shots I spelled out earlier.

Getting back to the swimming references: take the plunge. Get on the game-like training bandwagon. Drop that handicap. Win that 4-ball. Hit it closest to the pin on demand.

You’ve got that and more inside you just itching to see the light of day.
