  Yesterday at GLT Golf, we looked at what golf coaches could learn from the NFL Combine. Today, we’ll keep it going by examining what the NFL Combine can teach golf players.

  In case you didn’t read yesterday’s article (we’ll forgive you this time, let’s not make a habit of it,) the NFL Scouting Combine is designed to allow NFL coaches, scouts and doctors the opportunity to see first hand how prospective players perform across a series of events.

  At the end of the day, a golf coach is the same as the coach of any other sport. A significant portion of a golf coach’s time is spent analyzing the performances of players, judging progression, deciding which facet of a golfer’s game needs the most time and attention. Nowhere in the sporting world are these traits utilized more than during the NFL Combine, where NFL coaches, scouts, trainers and doctors examine prospective players prior to the NFL Draft.

The 2018 World Golf Classic – Mexico Championship at Club de Golf Chapultepec, Mexico City, Mex., saw Phil Mickelson lift the cup for the first time in nearly five years after defeating Justin Thomas in a playoff.

 

  Coming in to the weekend, Mickelson hadn’t won a PGA Tour event since 2013; Thomas could use his fingers to count the days since he was last on top.

  Justin Thomas won the 2018 Honda Classic in thrilling fashion. Sinking a birdie on the 18th hole to force a playoff with Luke List, Thomas delivered another birdie on the same hole for his second victory of the 2018 PGA Tour season. Thomas’s other win this season (the CJ Cup at Nine Bridges in October 2017) also ended in a playoff, with Thomas defeating Marc Leishman.
